Unreal Deal Junior and DJ1Ride Report

posted on 06/26/2008 / updated on 06/26/2008

Duncan recently took advandtage of our Unreal Deal and purchased an Unreal junior frame with a Marzocchi DJ 1.  He sent us a build and ride report for us to post if we wanted.  Well, we wanted, so here it is.

Lewis at Unreal Cycles, who was an absolute pleasure to deal with in every conceivable way gave me a nice deal on an Unreal Junior frame with the in-house Tike wheelset.  The Tike wheelset is pretty sweet, it comes with axles to run both the front and the rear as QR or thru-axle.I've been skate-parking it for a few months and haven't had to true the wheels yet.

Anyway, I built the bike up with some avid bb7 brakes, avid levers, an '08 Marzocchi DJ1, and some holzfeller cranks. All went together smooth, though the adjustable dropouts had some nice tight tolerances which required a little sanding of paint to get everything together properly.Frame requires full housing runs from the levers, but the routing is clean and effective.

Got it built up, then tried various spots for the adjustable dropouts. There's four spots to bolt the dropouts in, each of which gives noticeably different handling.I have it bolted to the second shortest wheelbase option, which works well for dirt-jumping and general gnar-shredding.Might go longer if using for slalom or four-cross.Its pretty quick and responsive with the DJ1, but not twitchy.

I've got a Fisher GED and a Kona Cowan and I've been only riding the Junior since I got it.Its got the longer cockpit of the Kona with the standover and chainstay length of the GED.

Pluses:

- Stiff

- Geometry has low standover height with long top tube.Makes for roomy cockpit and lots of knee room for tabletops;)

- Looks cool.Nicest example of hydroformed tubing implementation I've seen.

- Adjustable chainstay length via dropouts.Setup bike for fast stuff or skate park.

- Replaceable dropouts let you run QR or thru-axle.

- Ultra-low stack height due to integrated headset

- DJ1 + Unreal Junior gives quick and responsive steering.

Minuses:

- Frame has enhanced my sex appeal, though the attention mainly comes from squirrels and badgers. Is that normal?

- Not sold on integrated headsets in general, but so far no problems from mine

- Since there's four positions for the adjustable dropouts, may take some fiddling with chain length or cog choice to run single speed.

Here's a few shots of Unreal's pro rider Matt Adams building up his brand new Junior frame.

He chose to keep it simple and light and go the single speed route, although the Junior and Senior frames both allow the use of gears as well.

He's now ready to take on the season in Unreal style!

Stay tuned for more updates from Matt as he takes on the race season!

Unreal Cycles Unreal Package Deal

posted on 05/21/2008 / updated on 05/23/2008

For a limited time, we have available an Unreal package deal.  Were bundling together On-One’s Slot Inbred frames in your choice of 26er or 29er with their respective  Superlight Carbon fork and a Smoothie Regular headset.   Individually, these should have a MSRP of over $660.  We’re offering them up for only $450, plus we’ll throw in the shipping for free!

The Inbred frame is built using a custom blend of DN6 aerospace 4130 tubing, with a custom tooled dropout allowing you to run gears or single speed, tune the wheelbase for tire size or climbing action, run discs without any of the hassles associated with horizontal dropouts, and even fit a rack.  The On-One wishbone rear stay offers maximum lateral stiffness and braking efficiency, plus it allows for offer huge tire/mud clearance.  The frame is suspension corrected for an 80-100mm travel suspension fork.   This hand built beauty weighs in at 4.6lbs.

The Carbon SL fork is a no compromise option when it comes to saving weight and precise handling.  Its suspension corrected build has been fatigue tested beyond belief to offer excellent reliability to match its light weight.  There’s no rider weight limit, its roof rack approved, and you can run any size rotor on it.  Did we mention it’s light, sexy and strong?

Holding it all together is the On-One Smoothie Regular headset.  The precise CNC construction of the cups and race, coupled with the super smooth and incredibly well sealed huge 47mm lower bearing, make for a durable, light headset.  Tough enough for hard core freeride, light enough for XC race, and sealed well enough for submarine duty.

Unreal's First Sposered Rider - Matt Adams

posted on 05/08/2008 / updated on 05/08/2008

Unreal is proud to announce its first sponsored rider, Matt Adams. Matt is looking forward to being back on his bike after his injury and a promising season ahead.

"For most, bikes are a way to get around, cheaper than a car, faster than walking. For some bikes are a passion, something to look forward to after a long day at work. Still others make riding a lifestyle, I am one of these.
2008 marks my first season racing in the professional ranks, a level I have been working toward since age 14. After breaking my right fibula in the middle of February 2008, the day after my 20th birthday, my goals for my first pro season changed a little. I wanted to do well at Sea Otter, but was stoked to be able to race 2 months after breaking a leg.
Sea Otter showed me what needed to be done to get my season back on track. My main goal is to qualify to race in the World Cups next year. I also hope to be in the top 10 at every race I attend.
Some may say these are high-hopes for a first-season pro. I say anything’s possible." -Matt
